The benefits of colon hydrotherapy are cumulative — most clients find that a monthly session delivers noticeably better long-term results than occasional visits. For your first experience, we recommend an initial consultation and colonic, followed by a subsequent session within 3–4 weeks. From there, your practitioner will help you determine the right frequency based on your individual goals, whether that is ongoing monthly maintenance, a short course to address a specific concern, or seasonal support. Multi-session treatment courses are available for ongoing clients at better value — ask at your first appointment.

Eat lightly for at least 4 hours before your session — a large meal directly beforehand is not recommended, as your practitioner performs an abdominal massage during the colonic which can be uncomfortable on a full stomach. Drink plenty of water in the 24–48 hours leading up to your appointment to ensure good hydration, and reduce or avoid consuming carbonated drinks for three days beforehand. On the day, aim for something simple and light if you need to eat — avoid anything heavy, greasy or high in fibre. After your session, stick to easily digestible meals for the first 24 hours: soups, steamed vegetables, lean proteins and plenty of water. Your practitioner will provide you with electrolytes, magnesium and a dairy-free probiotic immediately after the session to support your body's recovery.

Sessions typically run between 45 and 60 minutes. Your first appointment will be slightly longer as it includes a full health assessment before the colonic begins. During the session, warm filtered water flows gently into and out of the colon while your practitioner performs an essential-oil abdominal massage to support release. Afterwards, you will receive electrolytes, magnesium and a dairy-free probiotic. We recommend allowing approximately 60-75 minutes for your first visit to account for paperwork, the health assessment and post-treatment care.

Authentix uses a closed-system device, which is our preferred method of colon hydrotherapy. In a closed system, the entire process is self-contained — water flows in, and waste flows out through sealed tubing connected to the device. There is no odour, no mess, and complete privacy is maintained throughout. Your practitioner is with you the entire time, controlling the water flow, performing abdominal massage, and analysing the matter you are releasing.

In an open system, the client typically lies on a device and manages the process more independently, with waste released into a basin beneath them. Most people have not been trained to assess or interpret what they see in their bowel motions. As trained colon hydrotherapists, we are taught to recognise patterns and observations that may indicate digestive health concerns or changes that warrant further attention. Open systems can involve some odour and require the client to be more hands-on. The closed system offers a more controlled, relaxed, and hygienic experience.

Colon hydrotherapy is not suitable during pregnancy. There are also a number of other health conditions that may be contraindications, including but not limited to: recent abdominal surgery, active inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's or ulcerative colitis in an acute flare), severe haemorrhoids, uncontrolled heart or kidney conditions, and certain hernias.
